What is AI visibility?
AI visibility is whether an AI assistant names your business when a customer asks it who to call. Ask ChatGPT for a dentist in San Jose and it returns one answer, not ten links. Being inside that answer is AI visibility. It is not the same as ranking on Google, and a business can have one without the other.
Search and AI answers are not the same job
| Search engine | AI assistant | |
|---|---|---|
| What the customer gets | Ten links to choose between | One answer |
| What decides who appears | Ranking signals, keywords, links | Whether a machine can find you, understand what you do, and verify you are real |
| Where the answer comes from | Your page, as a link to click | Your page, quoted, often with no click at all |
| How you check it | Rank tracking | Asking the assistants the questions your customers ask |
| What winning looks like | Position one to three | Being named at all |
Why would AI skip a business that ranks well on Google?
Because the two systems answer different questions. A search engine decides which pages are most relevant to a query. An assistant decides which businesses it can describe confidently enough to recommend by name. A site can rank first and still be unreadable to an assistant: services buried inside an image, the address only in the footer, no machine-readable statement of what the business does or where. The assistant does not rank it lower. It leaves it out, because it cannot say anything about it without guessing.
How does an assistant decide who to name?
It draws on what it can read about you and what it can corroborate elsewhere. Your site has to be reachable by its crawler. Your services and location have to be stated in a form a machine can parse. Your pages have to be structured so a specific sentence can be quoted. And your claims have to line up with what official records and third-party sources say. Businesses that are easy to verify get named. Businesses that require a leap of faith get skipped in favour of one that does not.
What can a business actually change?
More than most owners expect, and almost none of it is writing more marketing copy. Crawler access is a setting. Machine-readable services, location and hours are markup. Quotable structure is how a page is organised. Corroboration is making sure your listings and the public registries agree with your own site. None of it requires a redesign, and most of it is invisible to human visitors, which is exactly why it goes unnoticed for years.
How do you measure it?
By asking. The only honest measurement is to put the questions your customers actually ask to the assistants they actually use, and record whether you are named, in what position, and in what terms. Do that before any changes and again afterwards, and the difference is something you can see rather than take on trust. A score on its own is a claim. A before and after against the same questions is evidence.
